Tips for an Earth-Friendly School YearIt’s August and almost time to head back to the classroom. You have lists of items needed for the school year and with these tips and a little planning, you can be more sustainable and save some money too. - Check the school supplies you already have that can be used again. Only buy what you truly need.
- Pack a waste-free lunch. The average elementary school disposes of 20,000 pounds of lunch waste each year. Reduce waste by using reusable lunch boxes/bags, drink bottles, snack bags, and utensils. Purchase inexpensive cloth napkins that can be washed and reused.
- Buy food and snacks in bulk. It is less money and less packaging than single item purchases.
- Purchase fewer plastics. If you have to buy new products, choose durable wooden or metal rulers, and metal pencil sharpeners and scissors.
- Shop at thrift stores for back-to-school clothing.
- Buy products that are produced in a sustainable manner.

Heritage Museum Exhibit WE’VE GOT MAIL: A Postal History of West Orange County The mail began to move through our region over 160 years ago. Missives brought by pack mules, fast horses, and efficient wagons began to arrive at post offices established in the tiny agricultural communities mushrooming along the fertile south shore of Lake Apopka.
The exhibit features the post offices that served as lifelines to a pioneer population living hundreds or even thousands of miles from major cities. Included are letters and announcements heralding births, weddings, and the beginning of World War II. Collectors will enjoy viewing philatelic items related to moving our mail efficiently and quickly over the years.
